Turn Your Home into a Sanctuary with Casa Suarez

The world is a busy place; there’s no doubt about it. On a daily basis, many of us find ourselves waiting for hours in traffic, surrounded by people, places, and hives of activity. While many people thrive in this environment, just as many would rather retreat to the comfort of their home.

However, not all homes are the sanctuaries they could be, and sometimes that’s what you need to relax after a day or week of nothing but chaos. Creating a peaceful retreat within your home that offers a sense of zen and harmony could be the very thing you need to unwind and relax.

Create your own peaceful sanctuary at home with these five tips.

1. Choose a Calming Color Palette

It can be challenging to call your home a relaxing, zen sanctuary when it screams boldness at you when you walk in the door. If your home is filled with bold reds and other similar colors, it might be time to grab the paintbrush and get renovating.

A peaceful home is one that’s free of dominating paintwork that adds a sense of alarm rather than calm. Swap those bold red feature walls out for beiges, whites, greys, and even pink-beige hues. These are the very colors that invite a sense of calm and relaxation into your space.

Tip: Be sure to add texture where possible through either décor or wall paneling. Doing so helps your color scheme to stand out.

2. Utilize Rugs

When you’re looking to create a zen-like, peaceful sanctuary in your own home, you have to look at every part of your home with a critical eye. What is dominating the space? What is making it look harsh rather than peaceful? There are sure to be many areas of your home that require some improvement, but why not firstly look at your flooring.

If you have wooden floors, adding a rug can add a sense of luxury to your space, while tying in beautifully with your goals for a peaceful sanctuary. The best part is, there are so many options from which to choose.

Tip: Go for textures and natural colors where possible, and ensure the rug fits the size of the room without appearing too big or too small.

3. Opt for Natural Furniture

Aside from doing your part for the environment by choosing sustainably sourced furniture, natural furniture can help you to achieve your peaceful home sanctuary. Durable, robust and clean-lined natural furniture adds warmth, comfort, style, and relaxation to any space while offering a sense of responsibility as well. The best part is, there are so many options available.

From chests of drawers and side tables through to bookcases and cabinets, there are many different pieces you can implement into your home for peace and a touch of nature.

Tip: When you’re on the hunt for natural furniture, be sure to look for signs from the manufacturer about reuse, recycling, or sustainably sourced. Then you can rest assured the furniture is legitimately natural opposed to just looking like it.

4. Remove Clutter

Did you know the average American home features over 300,000 items? When you’re looking to create a peaceful zen-like home sanctuary, that very statistic can be overwhelming. Therefore, there’s no time like the present to remove your clutter and opt for a more minimalistic approach to life.

When you get home from a hard day at work, the last thing you want to do is be surrounded by clutter, knick-knacks, items piled high, and general “noise” in the home. Declutter your home to declutter your mind; it’s that easy.

If you do like to have centerpieces on dining tables and coffee tables, go for more natural and straightforward items such as platters or sculptures. They tie in with your zen-like environment rather than detract from it.

Tip: When decluttering your home, don’t throw perfectly good items away. Be sure to donate to worthwhile charities to give those items a second chance.

5. Limit electronics

If you work in an office environment, you will no doubt be surrounded by electronics on a daily basis. However, when you’re creating a sanctuary at home with a zen-like peaceful feeling, electronics should be kept to a minimum. Remove TVs from bedrooms, hide bulky electronics in wall cabinets, and secure all wires neatly and out of place. To feel truly at peace, you may also like to reach for a book rather than the remote.

Tip: Read a book before bed opposed to watching TV. You may find you’re able to sleep more soundly.

Turning your home into a peaceful, zen-like sanctuary takes many steps and lot of patience. However, it can all be worth it. Your mind can benefit from a calming and relaxing environment in a world that can often be considered in a chaotic state. Make your home an exception to that rule.
